Athena Hospice Care

Hospice you can trust. Care you deserve.

At Athena Home Health & Hospice we are committed to making a lasting difference in the lives of individuals diagnosed with a life-limiting illness by enabling them and their loved ones to live each day as fully and comfortably as possible. Our team of caring, professional staff and volunteers will pay careful attention to the medical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs of individuals, their families and friends.

Our staff is committed to working closely with the patient, family and caregiver to assist them in understanding the end of life process, identifying what they can expect at the end of life, and empowering them to provide care when our team is not present.

We are a community-based hospice agency providing end of life comfort care to patients in any setting that is considered home, as well as acute care hospital settings.

We offer our services in various towns within the Fairfield, Hartford, Litchfield, Middlesex, New Haven, New London and Tolland counties.

Our Hospice Care Team

Our Medical Director: Patients continue to remain under the care of their primary physician. In addition, they will be overseen by our medical director, who provides oversight, input and consultation to our team.

Our Nurses: Every patient is assigned a Registered Nurse who provides exceptional pain and symptom management, oversees the patients care and coordinates with other disciplines.

Our Hospice Aides: Our hospice aides provide personal care, light housekeeping, companionship and respite for family caregivers.

Our Social Workers: Our social workers are trained in providing emotional support to our patients and their family members. In addition, they are knowledgeable about community resources (Lifeline, Meals on Wheels and Fuel Assistance).

Our Chaplains: Our Chaplains are nondenominational. The goal of our chaplains is to provide a comforting presence to our patients, address spiritual needs, provide prayer and support to caregivers and families, and be a link to the patient’s faith community.

Our Volunteers: Our hospice is blessed with kind and caring members of the community who are CORI checked and have received comprehensive training. Our volunteers can provide companionship, assist with errands and provide respite relief to caregivers.

Complementary Therapies

Athena Home Health & Hospice offers a full array of special programs that bring enhanced quality of life to those with advanced illness. The categories of complementary therapies we offer are:

Caring Touch: Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation. It is a holistic method of healing, which focuses on the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels to promote a sense of wholeness and well-being.

Pet Therapy: Through the PAWS (Pets Are Wonderful Support) program, we have seen how being able to touch an animal can bring back memories and trigger conversation.

Music: Music has the ability to bring the body into harmony when it is stressed and has been able to serve as a "gatekeeper" in controlling pain. Our volunteers and staff are trained in the use of music for relaxation and reminiscence.
